Prices checked 12 October 2026

Looking for a Solid Starts alternative?

Solid Starts is the best-known first-foods app, and for many families it's worth it. If the price, the account or the subscription is what's stopping you, these are the other apps parents use, with what each one costs and who it suits.

We make Bitelings, one of the apps below. We've stuck to facts we could check, linked our sources, and said where other apps do more than ours.

At a glance

What each app costs

In-app purchase prices from each app's US App Store listing, read on 12 October 2026. Prices change, and other countries see local prices, so check the store before you buy.

Ranges are shown where the App Store lists more than one price for the same kind of plan. "Not checked" means we didn't record it, not that it's free. App names belong to their owners; we're not affiliated with any of them.

The alternatives

Who each app suits

Ratings are the US App Store averages on 12 October 2026. A small number of ratings tells you less than a big one.

Bitelings

iPhone · new, no ratings yet · made by us

Good fit if

  • You want how-to-serve guidance, a food log and allergen steps without paying or making an account
  • Two people feed the baby: caregiver sharing through iCloud is free
  • You'd rather pay once: Lifetime is $69.99, handy for a second baby
  • You often log with no signal: it works offline

Worth knowing

  • The guide covers 170+ first foods today, fewer than the biggest apps
  • iPhone only. No Android or web version
  • No ads. Anonymous usage stats (you can turn them off) and crash reports via Firebase, never linked to your name or your baby's details
  • General information, not medical advice

Why we built Bitelings

The basics shouldn't need a subscription

Before building Bitelings we read 660 public reviews of the most popular first-foods app. The two complaints that came up most were the price and having to pay just to log what your baby ate.

So in Bitelings, safety information and logging are free and stay free: how to serve each food at 6, 9 and 12+ months, choking risk first, a log that puts meals on the right day, progress to 100 foods, and nine allergens in three gentle steps each. Plus ($39.99 a year, $7.99 a month or $69.99 once) adds a day-by-day plan, every recipe and guide, a PDF for your pediatrician and multiple babies.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

Is there a free alternative to Solid Starts?

Bitelings has a free tier with no time limit: the full food guide, the food log and tracker, progress and every allergen step. BLW Meals: Starting Solids also offers a free food library. Solid Starts' own food pages on solidstarts.com are free to read on the web.

Is Bitelings on Android?

Not yet. Bitelings is an iPhone app (iOS 17 or later).

How much does Bitelings cost?

The core app is free. Bitelings Plus is $39.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, $7.99 a month, or $69.99 once for lifetime access (US prices; local prices vary).

How did you check these facts?

Prices, ratings and feature counts come from each app's public App Store listing and website, read on 12 October 2026. We didn't sign in to any of the other apps. If something here is out of date or wrong, email support@bitelings.app and we'll fix it.
